Corresponding playing card: 10 of Diamonds

The Book

BACK TO LIBRARY

The Book card usually shows a large leather bound book. It is a symbol of knowledge, education, wisdom, and intellectual depth. Whether open or closed, it naturally awakens curiosity about what is hidden beneath its cover.

At its core, the Book represents secrets, mysteries, and anything not yet revealed. It stands for knowledge, information, facts, and data. This card connects strongly with memory, learning, education, and mastery. It encompasses specialized studies, projects, research, and all forms of training.

The hidden aspect of the Book links it to esoteric and occult teachings. It speaks of the unknown, discoveries, breakthroughs, and the uncovering of what was once concealed. In a literal sense, it refers to journals, files, records, notebooks, or even a deck of cards.

Unspoken thoughts, hidden emotions, private actions, and personal secrets all live within the Book. It reflects our curiosity and our hunger to understand the mysteries of existence.

Personal stories with the Book

While working on this book, my husband was filming a movie released in 2002 starring Gwyneth Paltrow, based on a novel by A. S. Byatt. The entire story revolved around a hidden historical love affair, buried in time.

The film followed an investigation through journals and libraries, with scholars acting as detectives. It was the perfect illustration of the Book: academic settings, investigation, and the gradual unveiling of truth.

Another time, a draw of Book and Bouquet predicted a gift of a brand new Lenormand deck. In that case, the Book was quite literally a deck of cards, and Bouquet was the gift.

The Book reflects our curiosity and our hunger for knowledge. It appears often when I help my children with school projects, reminding me that some things are a dramatic struggle until the research is complete.

The Book in the Grand Tableau

In traditional Lenormand, the Book represents secrets. Its position shows how deeply buried the secret is. The closer it is to the significator, the more important the information.

Nearby cards tell if the truth will emerge. Book with Sun suggests secrets coming to light; Book with Key indicates information being unlocked; Book with Coffin points to knowledge remaining buried.

I also look at the Book to assess education level or to describe a person's inner world when it touches the Man or Woman card. Surrounding cards describe the circumstances of any project.

Key combinations and examples

  • Book with Fox: Secret work, espionage, or deceptive thinking
  • Book with Ring: Hidden obligations or confidential partnerships
  • Ring with Book: Further research required into a business alliance
  • Book with Coffin: Failure or an unsuccessful academic attempt
  • Book with Sun: Success and strong academic performance
The Book reveals unspoken thoughts and private actions.

"Embrace mystery and remain silent until the truth is better understood."
