The Crossroads

Back to Library

The Crossroads card usually depicts a rural intersection, with two or three paths branching off in different directions. It is the universal symbol of choice and decision making. Crossroads represents pivotal moments in life, where free will is activated and the direction you choose shapes the journey ahead. It is about personal agency, autonomy, and taking responsibility for the path you walk.

This card speaks directly to true freedom of choice. Your decisions determine your experiences. Crossroads reflects options, alternatives, and multiple possibilities. It also captures uncertainty, hesitation, and doubt when standing before an important decision. In difficult situations, Crossroads points to backup plans, alternate routes, and different ways of handling the same issue.

Crossroads can introduce themes of duality, living double lives, or divided loyalties. This is especially noticeable in combinations such as multiple offers, multiple romantic interests, or even twins. In relationship readings, when Crossroads appears on both sides of the significator, it is a classic indicator of infidelity.

🛣️Personal stories with the Crossroads

This card holds a special place in my heart. Long ago, on a Friday night, I was home alone after a date was canceled at the last minute. Feeling discouraged, I pulled a few cards and received: Ship, Woman, Crossroads, Heart, Dog.

At the time, I assumed Dog at the end meant friends would comfort me. Crossroads in the center stood out, but I was too emotionally drained to analyze it deeply.

Later that night, a friend showed up needing a ride. Her car was too small to fit everyone, so I drove her and two other women to a club in downtown Washington, DC. While driving, it hit me that Ship referred to my car. I was literally on the road.

On the way home through Georgetown, my car was full of women. At a red light, an intersection in the most literal sense, one of them spotted a German friend sitting in the next car, surrounded by men.

We pulled over abruptly. I wanted to leave, but before I did, I met my soulmate, the man who would become my husband. The cards had been incredibly literal. Driving on the road, I, the Woman, found love and joy with a loyal partner, the Dog.

It took me two days to finish writing this card. During those two days, I had to reschedule client appointments twice, weighing options and choosing the best solutions. Another perfect reflection of Crossroads at work.

🔍The Crossroads in the Grand Tableau

Traditionally, when Crossroads appears near Clouds, it warns of risk, trouble, and poor outcomes. While I no longer prioritize this pairing, I still note it as it can indicate looming problems, rough journeys, or conflicting decisions.

Clouds, Cross, and Mice around Crossroads describe a long, difficult journey rather than a sudden incident. When Crossroads is surrounded by positive cards, outcomes are exciting and satisfying.

When Crossroads appears above, below, or to the right of the significator, an important decision must be made. The surrounding cards provide guidance and details. When action oriented cards appear nearby, the decision will be made decisively.

I also check whether Crossroads lands in the final column of the Grand Tableau. When it does, it signals a major change in life direction. Timing depends on the distance between Crossroads and the significator.
