The Tower

Back to Library

The Tower card is often illustrated as a tall, upright structure with a pointed roof, standing alone among old ruins, as if declaring, “I am still standing.” It evokes the image of a grand, imposing building in a remote place. The Tower represents a structure with a solid foundation that rises high into the sky. It symbolizes both shelter and protection, as well as confinement, isolation, and separation.

I view the Tower as social institutions and everything that falls under their authority. These include governments, corporations, associations, large organizations, and systems with wide influence, such as the legal system or the military. Historically and symbolically, the Tower offers advantages: height, visibility, oversight, protection, and control.

The ego, ambition, isolation, confinement, and separation are also key themes of the Tower. Depending on context, it may represent guidance, protection, schools, law, higher education, hospitals, strong self esteem, apartment buildings, offices, shopping centers, prisons, correctional facilities, or airports. Essentially, it points to anything hierarchical, institutional, or structured with multiple levels and branches.

The Tower governs rules, regulations, laws, restrictions, and boundaries that must be respected. It represents bureaucracy, hierarchy, order, and structure. A note for Tarot readers: the Lenormand Tower has nothing in common with the Major Arcana Tower card.

⚖️Personal stories with the Tower

My friend Brooke endured a long legal battle that lasted several years. When reading for her, I assigned the legal case to the Tower and envisioned her situation before each court session. The surrounding cards were always mixed, both positive and negative, but the final card was consistently positive. I reassured her repeatedly that she would ultimately win.

One reading, however, deeply unsettled me. It showed both loss and victory, signaling complexity. The spread was Snake, Garden, Clover, Mice, Tower, Bear, Cross, Lilies, Stars.

The cards to the left of the Tower described the past and present: slander, large groups involved, small wins, and ongoing stress. The cards to the right predicted the outcome: Bear with Cross indicated a significant financial loss, Cross with Lilies suggested prolonged suffering, and Lilies with Stars promised eventual relief and renewed dignity. She would regain her standing and shine again.

When I explained this to Brooke, it resonated. The case had split in two. One part was lost, legal fees were draining her, and the stress was overwhelming. The case dragged on for another year. She endured enormous pressure, yet she told me repeatedly that she trusted my readings. I felt the weight of that responsibility deeply, but I was also honored by her trust.

When she finally called with the long awaited news that she had won decisively, my heart nearly leapt from my chest. I was overjoyed for her and proud of her resilience. That moment gave me tremendous confidence as a reader.

Another Tower story stands out clearly. One afternoon, while having tea with my friend Lea, she casually asked for a quick reading about her job. She worked in the corporate world, had a stable position, and felt content. I pulled Ship, Sun, and Tower. I told her she would be relocated with a promotion or move to a better position within a larger company. She doubted it.

She asked for another pull. This time I got Rider, Tower, and Bouquet. I immediately said this showed a new job offer from a large company and that it would be attractive. A month later, Lea called excitedly. She had received a very appealing offer from a major cosmetics corporation. Even more fitting, I was writing about the Tower on a government holiday, July fourth.

🏛️The Tower in the Grand Tableau

Traditionally, the Tower signifies long life unless Clouds appear nearby, in which case illness or accidents may be indicated. I look for the Tower when a client is studying, involved in legal matters, or working within a large institution.

When positive cards surround the Tower, it suggests a safe, stable foundation and the ability to realize ambitions. When negative cards surround it, the darker aspects emerge: isolation, confinement, and separation.

⚠️ Health readings should always include referral to medical professionals.
